The Exodus Of Nexus: What’s Next From Google This Year?

The brand ‘Nexus’ is all set to depart, but a substantial change in its software experience is on its way to accompany the new brand that will replace.

The news is that the latest Google-branded Android phones to be launched this year will not feature “Nexus” name. This signals the end of six years of brand’s positioning in the market for the company. The popularly known HTC handsets typically referred to as “Nexus” phones will be launched under a different brand name as per the people close to Google.

The decision seems to draw a line for the well-accepted Nexus brand of smartphones. The brand ‘Nexus’ was launched in December 2009 with the HTC-backed Nexus One. During the course of its Nexus initiative, Google partnered with the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC and Huawei to sell both phones and tablets featuring its latest software.

In contrast to this, these latest phones are supposed to feature the “Google” brand front and centre, shunning the
HTC name in total. Till date there is no final decision on the new brand identity by Google.
There is a speculation that the new brand will come up with an additional software and a modified interface on “vanilla” Android. This is going to play a significant role in drawing the line between the older Nexus devices and newer brand.

Keeping a check on the Nexus phone’s progression chart, it is clearly visible that Google has kept including closed-source apps, services and improvements to the Nexus series, completely shifting to a new paradigm of the branding.

Thanks to the recent discloses from Evan Blass and Android Police that indicated this change in Google’s new branding strategy. These revelations exhibited a new button layout, color scheme, and settings app that are eliminated from what we get on Nougat on the Nexus 6P and 5X today.

According to a recent analysis, it has become clear that there is no “substance” left in the brand “Nexus” and the new phones are expected to be launched in the fall window typically owned by Nexus devices. This clearly indicates that Google’s Android handset strategy has witnessed a major change not only in the firmware but also in UI experience.

As Google plans to go beyond smartphones, there is no clear roadmap on the plans for Google-branded Android tablets, though a close source was able to validate that Google will come up with two own-branded Android Wear smartwatches by the end of 2016.

The year’s end is around the corner and fans are also expecting first Android Nougat maintenance release, people are holding their breath for the biggest change in Google Android phones in the past half-decade.Let’s see what Google do to gain the competitive edge in today’s dynamic market scenario.
