Update Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.2.2 JB

Great news! The Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 users in the UK have received the latest official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean XXUDMH8 by OTA (Over-The-Air).

To transfer this benefit of to all the Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 users who didn’t receive this latest update as an automatic notification, we have created a manual update guide for their devices.

All the instructions and files provided in guide are provided only for educational and instructional purpose. We, Android Source team, will not be held responsible or liable for any device damage or data lose that occurs during this flashing process.

Pre-requisites and Guidelines:

  •  Important: The new official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (I9505XXUDMH8) firmware and all instructions listed here, in this article work only with Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 model. Don’t try on any other device.
  • Make sure that the device model number is the correct one by verifying it from the next path: Settings>About Phone.
  • Now, back-up and save all your personal data and settings using different back-up and restore application from Google Play Store. If you have installed custom recovery tool such as TWRP or CWM, get a full NANDROID back-up for your current running ROM, as a data wiping process is mandatory to complete this guide.
  • Download and install the suitable USB drivers for the Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 on PC, to assure the connection between the Android device and computer. If you don’t have these drivers,  you can download them from here
  • Enable the USB debugging mode option from here: Settings>Applications>Development or Settings>Developer Options.
  • Make sure that the device’ battery has more than 80 % power left in it.

How to Manually Install Android 4.2.2 XXUDMH8 Official Firmware on Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 using Odin flash tool.

  1. First, download the official firmware file from here and save it in your PC.
  2. Second, download ODIN v3.07 and save it in your computer.
  3. Now, extract the downloaded official firmware file to the desktop PC to obtain a .tar.md5 file.
  4. Next, extract the downloaded Odin zip archive file to obtain the Odin3 v3.07.exe and other few files.
  5. Turn off the S4 device , wait around 5-6 seconds until a vibration will confirm complete Galaxy S4 device shutdown.
  6. Boot it into Download Mode menu. To enter the Galaxy S4 device into Download Mode, press and keep holding the Volume Down, Home and Power buttons at  the same time until a warning message and a triangle sign will be displayed on the device’s screen, then press the Volume Up button to enter into Download Mode menu.
  7. Now, open the Odin3 v3.07.exe app as an Administrator.
  8. Connect the Samsung Galaxy S4 device to the PC using its USB cord, while the smartphone is still entering into Download Mode.
  9. Now, look into ODIN interface and make sure that the ODIN recognize the device, when the device is successfully connected an “Added” message will be displayed in ODIN, and the ID: COM box together with the corresponding COM port will be collared on yellow or blue.
  10. Note: If the ODIN doesn’t display the “Added” message then you need to reinstall the USB drivers once again or to change the USB port from the PC.
  11. Now, select the PDA checkbox from ODIN and click the ‘.tar.md5?file, extracted previously.
  12. Important: In Odin, make sure that the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options are enabled, by selecting their checkboxes. The Re-Partition checkbox must not be selected or checked.
  13. Verify once again all of the previously steps from above.
  14. Press START button to begin the installation firmware.
  15. Wait until the flashing process is complete.
  16. Once the firmware flashing process is done, the smartphone will reboot automatically, and into ODIN interface a PASS message with a green background is displayed. (In the left-most box at very top of ODIN interface).
  17. Now, after the home screen loads up, you can safe to disconnect the USB cable from PC.

Congratulations, the latest official Android 4.2.2 XXUDMH8 firmware is now running on Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 device.

Note: you can verify the firmware version from the next path: Settings > About Phone

Troubleshooting:

  • If the Galaxy S4 device is stuck at the first booting or it enters  into a boot loop, Wipe Cache Partition and Wipe Dalvik Cache a few more times, then reboot the device.
  • The new firmware needs around five minutes to stabilize.
  • If a Status 7 error message is flashed while flashing the new firmware, it could be due to an incorrect device or on it is not a necessary kernel. For this new firmware a Jelly Bean Kernel is necessary to be installed before flashing any Android Jelly Bean ROM.
