Update Sony Xperia Z with Android 4.3 Google Play Edition Ported custom ROM

The first build Android 4.3 Jelly Bean firmware for Google Play Edition of Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 has been launched for the test. This latest firmware version JWR66N  has been ported successfully for quad-core Snapdragon 600 variant of S4 GT-I9505 device.

 

A new custom ROM based on Android 4.3 Google Play Edition for Sony Xperia Z device has been developed by a XDA developer named Taylor_Swift.

The developer ported the new Android 4.3 Google Play Edition on Sony Xperia Z device successfully and shared with us this custom ROM.

The main advantages and features of Android 4.3 comes are the latest 4.3 updates, new 4.3 camera, new Android 4.3 ‘Under the Hood’ updates/tweaks’ and is stable, and it is remarkably fast.

Pre-requisites:

  • First, you need to download, and install the suitable USB Driver for Sony Xperia Z.
  • Second, take the backup all data stored of the smartphone because the step by step tutorial is likely to wipe out all your data stored into internal device’s memory.
  • Enable the USB Debugging Mode option on the Xperia Z smartphone from the next path: Menu>> Settings>> Applications.
  • Click on the Development option and check the USB Debugging Mode option and make sure the USB Debugging Mode is enabled.
  • Verify the battery of Sony Xperia Z to have more than 85% charge for its power level.
  • Otherwise the device can get a forced power off in the middle of the flashing process.
  • This latest custom ROM can be installed only on Xperia Z device which has the bootloader unlocked.
  • So, make sure that the bootloader of Sony Xperia Z device is unlocked.
  • Also, the smartphone should be a rooted device and to run a custom recovery image such as CWM recovery installed on the Sony Xperia Z device.
  • This latest custom ROM based on Android 4.3 Google Play Edition works only with Sony Xperia Z device.
  • Do not try to apply the same for any other incorrect similar or different devices is likely to damage them.
  • After the custom ROM was installed on the device, the first boot the users should familiarize with this new Android version.

Install Android 4.3 Google Play Edition ROM on Sony Xperia Z device – step by step guide:

  1. Download the custom ROM Android 4.3 Google Play Edition for Xperia Z(GoogleEdition-4.3-Xperia-Z-[BETA].zip) and save the same to the PC.
  2. Now, connect the Sony Xperia Z device to the PC with the help of its USB cord.
  3. Transfer with copy and paste the downloaded custom ROM firmware zip file to SD card of the Xperia Z device.
  4. Do not extract the downloaded and copied file.
  5. Next, disconnect the smartphone from the PC by removing the USB cord.
  6. Turn OFF the Sony Xperia Z device.
  7. Now, Boot the Sony Xperia Z device into recovery mode. To do that press and keep holding the Volume Down + Home and Power buttons at the same time. For navigating between Recovery Mode options use Volume buttons and Power button for select desired options.
  8. From the recovery mode,  you have to do a Nandroid backup for saving your actual running ROM (to do a Nandroid backup you need select Backup and Restore option, and after that you need to select Backup option from the next screen.
  9. After you have made a complete backup, return in the main Recovery Mode Menu.
  10. From the main Recovery Mode menu perform data wiping action, this is necessary to eliminate any temporary clash between the old SO and the new custom ROM.
  11. So, select wipe data/factory reset then select confirm your action with Yes option from the next screen. Now, select wipe cache partition option, and after the wipe cache process is complete, select Wipe Dalvik Cache option. Now, return to the main recovery menu.
  12. Now, select install zip from sdcard option and after that select choose zip from sdcard and browse, select transferred Android 4.3 Google Play Edition ROM zip copied to the SD card of the Sony Xperia Z device.
  13. Use the Power button to select and to confirm its installation.
  14. Next, wait until the flashing process is done and return to the main recovery menu.
  15. From the main Recovery Mode menu select reboot system now.

Note: the first reboot can take some more time than normal.

Congratulations, now the Xperia Z device is updated with the new Android 4.3 Google Play Edition custom ROM.

For verifying the actual ROM that is running on your device navigate to: Menu>>Settings>> About phone>> Software info.
