Update Xperia Tablet Z to CyanogenMod 10.2 ROM

The latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update can now be installed on Sony Xperia Tablet Z via unofficial build of CM 10.2 (CyanogenMod 10.2) ROM.

As you know that, the newly CM 10.2 ROM is fast and stable platform, but there are a few untested bugs or boot loop issues. In case, you’ll install the latest CM 10.2 and you don’t like it very much, you should reinstall an official firmware or any other custom stable firmware to fix the issues.

Pre-requisites:

  • This is applicable with Sony Xperia Tablet Z, to ensure that the device is the correct one verify the model number from  Settings> About Tablet.
  • Take the backup of all of the data, market applications and settings.
  • Use the custom recovery image as CWM or TWRP to get a full backup for your actual ROM, a wiping process is needed. .
  • Download Sony Xperia Tablet Z USB drivers and install them on the PC
  • From the Menu > Settings > Applications > Development, enable the USB debugging mode.
  • Ensure the battery of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z and it should be at least 80 percent charged.
  • The tablet should be factory unlocked and not locked to a particular carrier.
  • Verify if the Xperia Tablet Z device is rooted and has a CWM Recovery tool installed.

 How to Install Android 4.3 Jelly Bean via CyanogenMod 10.2 ROM on Sony Xperia Tablet Z device:

  1.  Download the CyanogenMod 10.2 ROM based on Android 4.3 for Sony Xperia Tablet Z from the below links:
  2. Download Google Apps file and save it on computer.
  3. Connect the Sony Xperia Table Z device to PC using the USB cable.
  4. Copy the downloaded firmware zip files to the root folder on the device’s SD card memory, without extract it.
  5. Now, disconnect the device from PC.
  6. Turn off the device.
  7. Boot it into recovery mode (press and keep holding Volume Down, Power buttons simultaneously).
  8.  From the Recovery Mode perform a Nandroid backup of the actual ROM. ( This backup can be restored if something goes wrong or you don’t like the new ROM).
  9. Note: To get a Nandroid backup, select Backup and Restore and then select Backup again from the next screen.
  10. Wait for completing the backup and when it’s done, back  in the main Recovery Mode menu.
  11. Now, eliminate clash between the new ROM and the previous firmware.
  12. Selectwipe data/factory reset and after that Yes. Then select wipe cache partition and after it is done select Wipe Dalvik Cache under advance option.
  13. When the wiping tasks are done, return to the main Recovery Mode menu.
  14. Next, select Install Zip from SD card and then select Choose Zip from SD card.
  15. Browse and select the copied CyanogenMod 10.2 ROM zip file from the device’s SD card. Use the Power button to select it and for confirming its installation.
  16. Once the flashing process is done, repeat the above step but select the copied Gapps file.
  17. Return to the main menu of Recovery Menu and select Reboot System Now. 
  18.  Wait until the device will enter in the normal mode, the first boot will take some time supplementary as a normal boot.

 Congratulations, now the Xperia Tablet Z is updated with the new CM 10.2 ROM based on Android 4.3

Verify the firmware version from Menu-Settings->About Tablet-Software info

Troubleshooting:

If the Xperia Tablet Z device is stuck at the booting or it’s entering into a boot loop, you have to Wipe Cache Partition and Wipe Dalvik Cache for few more times consecutively and reboot the device.

In case, Status 7 error message flashes during the installation process, your device is an incompatible one or it does not have a necessary kernel (a jelly bean kernel must be installed before installing a new Android version).

Note: wait for 5 minutes before using the device, this is required to stabilize the new ROM.

Note: In case you don’t like very much the new ROM or something goes wrong and you want to restore the previous ROM, boot the Sony Xperia Tablet Z into Recovery Mode and from there— select Backup and Restore, Restore, browse and select the previous backup ROM file and confirm.

Note: Into Recovery Mode, use Volume buttons to navigate between different options and the Power button to select and confirm the options which you want.
