The Android 7.1 Nougat update has shown the desire to try devices like Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, the Pixel C and a few more.

Among new Android 7.1 Nougat features, we can find notification improvement that have a quick reply option, a lot of emoji, skin tones, a split screen, and quick switching apps, improved security and also a new tool in the settings called Manage Storage.

In this post, we will focus on the Manage Storage feature, to learn how to take advantage of it. Manage Storage is, as its name says it, a storage manager that appears in the device’s Storage section of Settings and provides users two options: to manually free up space or to enable Smart Storage. You might say that it is an automatic version of the other, but they actually do different things and work well together.

How to Manual cleanup space on your device

To find the manual cleanup tool, go to Settings -> Storage -> Manage or in the overflow menu of the Storage section. By tapping “Free up space” you will see that it’s generates a list of potential items that can be safely removed, listed in categories like photos and videos older than 30 days, downloads and apps not used in the past 90 days.

You can choose the type of data to remove by checking the corresponding checkbox. You can include or exclude any of these categories and expand them to drill down into downloads or apps list. Select the items you want to remove and tap the free up space button. Once you’ve finished up the removing process you’ll be prompted to enable Smart Storage.

How to enable Smart Storage option

For manual cleanup space and to have access to Smart Storage, open the Settings,  tap on Storage -> Manage Storage, here you can enable or disable the Smart Storage option.

It is important to choose how often you want Smart Storage to remove photos and videos from your device. Tap on the option and you can select from 30, 60, or 90 days.

Smart Storage integrates with Google Photos and automates the “free up space” option in that app, to delete pictures locally that have been backed up to the cloud. Enabling Smart Storage option will automatically remove photos and videos from your Android device every 30, 60 or 90 days.

This simple option saves you from regularly choosing the agree option in the photo prompt to free up space and avoid the chances of running into storage full warnings. However, enabling Smart Storage doesn’t automate all of your Android 7.1 storage solutions.

Storage management is a way to improve your Android experience while still ensure you with fine-grained control.
