How to Get New Features in Android Apps Before Anyone Else

If you use an Android phone and wish to enjoy the latest features of various apps before anyone else, you can easily do that.

With support for beta testing built right into the newest version of the Play Store, you can explore the latest versions of most of the popular apps much before they’re officially launched.

What is a Beta?

In plain words, beta version is defined as the development stage of an app and opened for people who aren’t the part of the development team. As it is in development stage, it can be downloaded and executed but one may experience sluggish or unstable performance due to ongoing development. Beta testers discover bugs, usability problems, and promote new or improved features that tend to enhance the app.

It is pretty much common for each app to undergo Beta testing as this helps in improving the performance and functionality of the app for the ultimate users. There are various types of beta program. For example, a closed beta makes the app available for a limited number of people while an open beta is meant to be available for everyone.

App developers receive user feedback on these apps and make necessary tweaks to address the issues. After meeting all needs, the app is finally sent for official launch.

How to Beta Test Android Apps

In the start of this year, the latest version of the Google Play Store was launched to allow users to get in or get out of beta programs directly using the general app listing page. However, it is important to note that the mechanism is meant for open betas and majority of apps now rely on this type. All leading apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter use this method.

Search the Beta Program

To start with, launch Google Play Store, go to any app you like and scroll down. You’ll notice a big box mentioning “Become a beta tester” if app is open for beta testing.

To become a beta tester, choose the button labeled I’M IN. You’ll receive a confirmation giving warning about possible bugs. Choose Join and that’s it.

Please note that it may take few minutes to process your request. When it’s finished you’ll be allowed to update to any beta version that’s available. You can do using the tab in ‘My apps & games’, or you can also swipe across to the Beta tab to find your beta apps.

Generally, it is not problematic but you might get a message “Beta programme is full” if program is not available.

Exit a Beta Program

To exit a beta program, just follow the above steps. Just give your confirmation on  the message “Leave beta programme” and tap Ok.

Get Early Access to Beta Apps

Unfortunately, there is no such thing to get quicker access to open beta apps. The only way is to search for them using Google Play Store. However, there is an Early Access category in the Play Store, but that only gives a preview of apps that have not yet been officially released.

Closed Beta Tests

To test these apps, the only way is to get the direct link of the app. However, this link may redirect you to the Play Store but you’ll find it under unlisted category. This won’t show up in searches and may on the developer’s website.

In most of the cases, you can get these apps by becoming a member of a Google+ community or Google Group for the app.

Beta testing is a great way to enjoy the latest features of your favorite apps before they’re officially launched. You can explore a range of apps that are currently available for Beta testing.
