The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge users from the United States are now receiving the official OTA Android 7.0 Nougat update for their devices. This will not be available to users of other location. However, you can receive this update by the method described in this post. This can be used by users currently running a custom ROM on their devices since ODIN 3.12.3 tool is capable of flashing an official stock Android firmware over devices with custom ROMs.
You should read the whole tutorial before starting the installation process. Check the following guidelines:
- This guide is dedicated to the T-Mobile model of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, the SM – G935T version. So before doing anything else, go to Settings-> About Device section and see if this guide can be used for your device.
- Don’t try to update other different Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge models.
- Download from here the Samsung USB drivers and install them on your computer. They will allow your computer to detect the smartphone when you connect it with the USB cable.
- On your smartphone, enable USB Debugging that can be found under Developer Options menu. If the Developer Options menu is not listed under Settings, unhide it by going to Settings-> About Phone and tapping seven times on the Firmware Version Number text. Then, return to Settings, find Developer Options and check the USB Debugging field.
- If your device is rooted you can install the new firmware, but you need to know that the root access will not survive the update. Also, it is important to know that custom Recovery you might have installed on your device is going to be replaced with the stock Recovery.
- If you want to flash the new update over custom ROMs, you will have to Factory Reset the smartphone after installing the new firmware. You will find the Factory Reset process listed at the end of this post. Factory Resetting the smartphone will wipe its system partition; it will delete the custom ROM and will allow the new firmware to boot successfully.
- If your device is running on 100% stock Android firmware, you won’t lose any data in the process.
- This guide is for advanced users only. We cannot be blamed if you brick your phone or lose any important data files in the installation process.
- Read the entire guide and don’t skip any steps in order to successfully complete the update from the first time.
- Charge your device and make sure that the battery level is more than 50% before the device switches off.
How to install the Android 7.0 Nougat Update for T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
1. On your computer, download from here the Android 7.0 Nougat firmware file archive, extract the archived content and save the files on your computer. You will obtain a G935TUVU4BQB1 tar.md5 firmware file, don’t unzip this file.
2. Download from here the Odin 3.12.3 zip, extract the contents and save them on your computer.
3. Power off the Galaxy S7 Edge T-Mobile smartphone and boot it into Download Mode.
4. Open ODIN exe on your computer.
5. Connect the smartphone to the computer using a USB cable and wait for ODIN to detect the device. If the smartphone is not added, reinstall the Samsung USB drivers.
6. From the ODIN main screen, click AP.
7. Find the G935TUVU4BQB1 tar.md5 and load the firmware updating file in ODIN. Be careful to not change other different Odin settings.
8. Press START to begin the updating process and don’t press something else until the update is done.
9. When the installation is complete, ODIN will show the PASS message and your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge device will restart. Wait until the first boot is complete.
10. Unplug the smartphone from the computer, and use your usual login data to unlock the Samsung device.
What if:
- ODIN displays the FAIL alert, you need to repeat the whole step by step tutorial more than once. Make sure that you don’t skip any steps and that the smartphone is the one indicated in this post.
- ODIN displays the PASS alert, but your smartphone pass in a boot loop, or it stuck at the boot screen for more than 20 minutes, it’s factory reset the device.
The Factory Reset process should be applied also by the users that have installed the update over a custom ROM because otherwise, their devices won’t boot in normal mode. It cleans the device’s system partition, and it will force it to boot in normal mode with the new firmware.
How to Factory Reset the device
- Power off the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge device.
- Boot it into Recovery Mode.
- Select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ and then confirm.
- Reboot the smartphone in normal mode.
