How to Root Nexus 4 on Android 4.4.3 KTU84L KitKat OTA and Flash CWM Recovery

If you have a Nexus 4 device running under the Android 4.4.3 KTU84L KitKat OTA Update and you want to root it, you can easily do this after reading this article. . This new root process with SuperSu application will provide you a method to install the ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery or TWRP Recovery image.

 

The rooting process is very essential to install different root applications, new custom ROM and system tweaks for optimum performance of your device.

Before starting the rooting process, you should know the following pre-requisites:  Android Source Team isn’t responsible or held liable for any damage to your device during or after root process. Users are advised to try this guide only at their own risk.

How to root the Nexus 4 device on Official Android 4.4.3 KTU84L KitKat Firmware.

  1. First, Download SuperSU v1.99 (UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip) for Google Nexus 4 device on your PC.
  2. Now, connect the Nexus 4 USB and mount the mass storage on PC by using a USB cord.
  3. Copy and paste the downloaded SuperSU root pack to the root folder on your device’s internal memory.
  4. Turn off the device.
  5. Download the CWM version 6.0.4.7or TWRP version 2.7.1.0 and save it to next path: android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory on your PC.
  6. Note: You can use CWM or TWRP custom Recovery tools based on your preference.
  7. Now, boot the Nexus device into Fastboot/Bootloader mode (Press and keep holding the Volume Down and Power Buttons for a few seconds until some text lines is displayed to confirm the entry into BootLoader Mode.
  8. Now, Browse to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory and from there open the Command Prompt Window.
  9. To do this press and hold Shift button from the PC keyboard and select Open Command Prompt.
  10. Now on the CMD window, type fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.7-mako.img and press Enter.
  11. Once the command is executed chose the Recovery from the FastBoot menu and enter into Recovery Mode.
  12. In CWM recovery, navigate to “flash zip from SD card” option and press the power button to select the option.
  13. Tap the Power button once more and now select the “choose zip from sdcard”.
  14. Now, use the volume keys to navigate for UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip file and select it by pressing the Power Button.
  15. Now, confirm the root installation process and wait for the completion of the installation process.
  16. Once the root installation is done, select the “+++++Go Back” and then restart the device by using the “reboot system now” option from the Recovery menu.
  17. Now from the Recovery menu reboot the device by selecting the “reboot system now“.
  18. The device will get a restart, you should wait around 5 minutes for the first boot with the root rights.

Congratulation, now the Nexus 4 device is rooted on stock Android 4.4.3 KitKat firmware.

To verify if the root rights have been applied successfully, you can check for SuperSu application in your device’s applications list.
