The Sony Xperia Z running by default Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmware, but the users who want to install the latest Android 4.2.2 can flash a custom ROM firmware developed by PAC team named PACman custom ROM based on Android 4.2.2.
This latest custom ROM comes with a great combination between CyanogenMod AOKP and Paranoid Android OS.
Today, during a step by step tutorial we will teach you how to install Android 4.2.2 Jelly bean using the PACman ROM on the Sony Xperia Z device, thanks of a senior XDA developer named jeroenqui which shared with us this custom ROM (PACman v22.1.0).
From the developer, we noted that this custom ROM is a stable firmware, but each custom ROM is known that can has minor bugs or issues, for more details you can find in the development page from here.
Before starting our step by step tutorial some prerequisites are required to be applied, and for that we will present you guidelines below:
- All these instructions and information presented here are only for instructional and educational purpose. If you want to apply for your device, you’re the only responsible for what you do.
- We (Android.sc) team will not be held responsible or liable for any brick to the smartphone, or any data you’ll lose during the installing process.
- Make sure you’ve installed the proper USB Driver for Sony Xperia Z on your PC.
- This procedure will wipe out all your data stored of the device’s internal memory and for that reason you need create a full backup and save all your personal data stored on your device.
- Save the SMS uisng the SMS backup and restore app
- Save your Market app
- Save your Call Logs using the Call Logs backup and restore app.
- Save your APN configuration and note down your internet settings.
- Sync your contacts with your Gmail account.
- Save all your personal data on the cloud or on the local.
- If the smartphone is running a custom recovery image like CWM or TWRP you can perform a NANDROID backup for the current ROM that is running in your device, this backup will represent a restore point in case something doesn’t work well.
- Enable USB Debugging Mode on your Xperia Z device, to do that follows the next path: press Menu>Settings>Aplications and verify if the USB Debugging Mode option is tuned on.
- The Sony Xperia Z device should have an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery image already installed such as CWM (ClockworkMod) or TWRP.
- Verify the device’s battery to have more than 85% power left on it; otherwise your device can get a forced power off during the updating process.
- This tutorial and all instructions listed here are provided only for Sony Xperia Z, do not apply the same for any other device might brick them.
How to install Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on Sony Xperia Z (custom PACman ROM) – step by step guide:
- Step 1: Download the PACman firware file for Xperia Z to the PC or from here.
- Step 2: Download the Fastboot pack to the PC. After the file is totally downloaded, extract the same in C drive of your PC directly on the C:. path. After you have extracted you should have a “fastboot” folder, which containing four files.
- Step 3: Connect the Sony Xperia Z smartphone to the PC, to do that use the USB cord.
- Step 4: Copy and Paste the PACman firmware zip file downloaded previously to the device’s internal storage of the Sony Xperia Z smartphone.
- Step 5: Now unzip the downloaded ROM zip file to get the boot.img file.
- Step 6: Copy and Paste the boot.img file to “fastboot” folder in the C: drive.
- Step 7: Now, power off your Sony Xperia Z device.
- Step 8: Boot the smartphone into its fastboot mode, to do that press and keep holding the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneous.
- Step 9: While the smartphone is in the fastboot mode, connect it to the PC using the USB cord.
- Step 10: Open a CMD (command prompt) window on your PC, to do that open the “run” app and enter from the keyboard the CMD and press “enter”, or go to Start menu>All Programmes>Accessories and choose the CMD app.
- Step 11: Enter the following command line on the CMD window command prompt):
cd c:Fastboot
- Step 12: Now, enter the following command line in the CMD window to install the boot.img file.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
- Step 13: Now, you should have a message that say waiting for device. After this message is displayed enter the following command line:
fastboot -i 0x0fce flash boot boot.img
On this step, when the boot.img is fully flashed on the Sony Xperia Z device, you should to see a message saying finished or okay.
- Step 14: When the installation process is done, disconnect your device by removing the USB cord from the PC and place the device into Recovery Mode.
- Step 15: Now from the Recovery Mode, select Wipe data/factory reset and confirm your action, then select wipe cache and confirm. Now select the advanced tab and select wipe cache dalvik and confirm this action.
- Step 16: Once the data wiping process is done, you have to return to the main Recovery Mode menu.
- Step 17: From the main Recovery Mode select install zip from sdcard and after that select choose zip from sdcard, browse the copied custom ROM zip file, select it and confirm its installation.
- Step 18: Wait to perform the installation of custom ROM, and once the flashing is done, return to again to the main recovery mode menu and from there select reboot system now.
- Step 19: Now, when the Xperia Z device complete its reboot, it should to boot for the first time on the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean PACman custom ROM. To verify if this new custom ROM is this, go to Settings>About phone, there you should to see the software version that is running of your device.
Note: In case the new ROM does not work, restore the previous ROM that you’ve got previously with the NANDROID backup. To do that turn off the Sony Xperia Z smartphone into Recovery Mode, to do that you need press and keep holding the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneous. From the Recovery Mode, select the Backup and Restore and then select Restore. Browse the previously ROM and select it to be restored.
