CM11 to Galaxy S3

How has been your experience of Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300? Have you failed while installing new software on it? Try installing on it, the Official CyanogenMod 11 Nightlies ROM build on Android 4.4.2, by following our step-by-step tutorial. You can manually install the first official CM 11 Nightly build on the S3 device model number I9300 International variant.

Pre-requisites:

  • This step by step guide works only for Samsung Galaxy S3 devices model number I9300. Knowing that, you don’t need to try the same on other devices otherwise you will end up damaging and breaking them.
  • The Samsung Galaxy S3 device has to be a rooted device. The latest CWM Recovery Image must be installed on it. Note: The TWRP Recovery image should also work for it, if the device has the latest version of TWRP Recovery application.
  • A “Factory Reset” operation is required during the installation process, and this means that you’ll lose all data that is stored on the device’ system partition. The data stored into internal or external SD cards won’t be affected by this operation.
  • Important: Do not skip the “factory reset” step, without this new custom ROM won’t boot into normal mode.
  • During the step by step tutorial, you’ll find a NANDROID ROM Backup point, this is extremely important to be performed. It is a restore point to be used in case the new custom ROM doesn’t boot in normal mode.
  • Backup your data from installed apps. For doing this you should use the Helium application that is available from Google Play Store from here.
  • Backup all your SMS text messages and the APN Internet Settings by using suitable applications for Android devices.
  • You need sync all existing Contacts info by using your Gmail account.
  • From the Developer Options menu, enable the USB Debugging mode option.
  • Ensure that the battery charge level of the S3 device has more than 65 % power left; this will prevent the S3 device from a forced power off in the middle of the flashing process.
  • This tutorial and all instructions listed here are provided for instructional and educational purposes, especially for advanced Android users who know exactly what they have to do.
  • Note that, we (Android Source Team) cannot be held liable or responsible for any data lost or in case you break your device in the installation process.

I think these are all prerequisites that you’ve to follow firstly before moving to the next section where I will teach you how to update the Galaxy S3 device with the latest CM 11 custom ROM based on Android 4.4.2 KitKat Nightly build.

How to install the latest CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 Nightlies for Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300:

  1. Firstly, download the custom CM 11 ROM zip from here.
  2. Secondly, download Gapps for Android 4.4 OS from here.
  3. By using the USB cable connect the smartphone with your computer.
  4. Move the both downloaded zip files to the device’ internal storage.
  5. Once the downloaded files are successfully copied, disconnect the Galaxy S3 device from the PC.
  6. Do not unzip the downloaded files.
  7. Turn off the Galaxy S3 device.
  8. Boot the S3 device into CWM Recovery mode. If you don’t know exactly how to enter into Recovery Mode, you can check this guide from here. The TWRP Recovery will work too, but you need to have on the S3 device the latest possible version of TWRP.
  9. From the Recovery menu, you should get a full Nandroid backup, to do this select “Backup and Restore” and then save the backup file on the S3 device.
  10. Now, select “wipe data/factory reset” to apply the Factory Reset and confirm the action.
Note: If the Samsung Galaxy device already runs on a previous CM11 KitKat Nightly build, you can skip the Factory Reset step from above.
  11. Install the CM 11 custom ROM now. Select “install zip from SD card” and then “choose zip from SD card”. Browse the copied custom ROM file and confirm the installation.
  12. Repeat the above step and install the Gapps for Android 4.4 in the same manner.
  13. Wait for completing the installation of both zip files, and return on the main custom, main Recovery mode.
  14. From the main menu of custom Recovery, reboot the Galaxy S3 into normal mode.
  15. Note: Keep in mind that the first boot may take more than the normal time. All you need to do is to wait until the installation process completes.
  16. The last step is: To create and login into your CyanogenMod account.

 Troubleshooting:

If the Galaxy S3 device takes too long to complete the first boot, you need to turn off the device totally. Repeat all the instructions from the above tutorial once again. Note: Ensure that, to apply the Factory Reset when you try once again to install the CM11 custom ROM into the Galaxy S3 device.
