When Lenovo bought Motorola from Google for $ 2.9 billion, the search engine giant was keen to preserve the project of modularity from Moto. It is about Ara Project, which could result in a modular handset in 2015.
The idea of modularity dates several years back and involves the construction of a modified cell phone which adds new components like LEGO parts to upgrade. At these moment smartphones are assembled with well-established specifics, but in the future we could just buy a ” core” of the phone and then attach hardware, battery and camera to improve certain aspects.
Thanks to a new video, we can see how work progresses for the modular phone in a tour of the Google offices.
In the clip, we see a preliminary version of the framework that will be placed components. This is called ” endo ” and modules snap into the silver frame with magnets. Electro – magnets are permanent, meaning that the pieces can be fixed or released with an application. That means Ara Project will not require a protective housing that takes modules fixed in position. We also, notice the application that will allow people to purchase Ara Project phones and configure them as they taste. We see a preliminary design of 3D Systems partner company for both endo and modules. We realize that users will be able to customize the layout using textures, colors or images. The video was unveiled to arouse interest in the phone, one week before the first conference of Ara developers, to be held on April 15-16.
