Google to launch Android TV at Google I/O developer conference next month

Android TV

The launch of Android TV by Google is near, and this new concept will be official announced at the Google I/O developer conference which will be held in San Francisco next month.

The new project from Google about which rumors emerged for the first time back in April will be a platform and not a device as some might think, platform use by the TV and set-top boxes manufacturers to bring streaming services to the television.

Google has tried before a similar platform namely Google TV in 2010, but this project has not had any future.

Now, Google will try something little different because Android TV will focus on online media services like Hulu Plus and Netflix and Android video games, at least at the beginning, according to Gicaom.

The user interface of Android TV will be simple, and users will be able to browse TV shows or movies as soon as they turn on the Android TV platform, due to Pano ( Google calls the setup this way) which work with “cards” on the home screen of the device, offering a horizontal and fashioned interface.

One important question that many will ask is Why Google would want another platform since they failed with Google Tv? As Gigaom pointed, it seems, it may be two points of viewing this: one strategic and another political.

The use of Chromecast, the streaming stick launched by Google last year, is a good and not too expensive device for the users that use their mobile devices to launch media content on their TV, but this is a limited hardware.

Morovere, a powerful device able of running full Android apps could attract the occasional gamers.

As the corporate political point of view is said that back in 2010 when Google TV was launched as a new Android based product, this did not share a lot with the company’s Android team vision.

In reality Google TV was based on Honeycomb, an arm of Android distinct from the main Android team.

This being said we just have to wait and see what impact it will have Android TV and how it will be received by consumers after the official launch of the Google I / O developer conference.
