Google has announced its next version of its mobile operating system will called Android KitKat. The announcement comes as a surprise as the Google had previously announced version 4.4 of the Android OS would be named Key Lime Pie.

The information has been confirmed by a splash page for the new Android OS where is specified that the KitKat will be the codeline for the next Android 4.4 and not the rumored Android 5.0.
The KitKat name appears to keeps the Google’s Android version names ling-standing tradition, where each version of Android OS was named after deserts.
And in the same page we can take a look over the previous versions named after a desert:
- Android 1.5, Cupcake
- Android 1.6, Donut
