How To Update Motorola Moto Maxx to Android 7.1 Nougat via crDroid custom ROM

Released in November 2014, Motorola Moto Maxx smartphone is not on the list to receive the official Android Nougat update because its hardware limitation.

However, if you are a Motorola Moto Maxx user, you can update your device to the latest Android Nougat firmware with crDroid, a customized and optimized ROM. The crDroid custom ROM will update your device to the latest Android features, and you don’t have to worry because your Moto Maxx device will still run on a stable Android firmware.

The crDroid is a stable and light ROM based on Android 7.1 Nougat and it was developed especially for the Moto Maxx devices, so applying it, you will be able to handle all your daily activities without  bugs, lagsor other software related problems.

However, being a custom ROM developed by third-party developers, and not an official Motorola release, you might still find things that aren’t yet fully optimized.

This custom ROM is based on the stock Android Nougat system but it represents an aftermarket distribution, so, updating your Moto Maxx to Android 7.1 Nougat using this process, means the warranty of your smartphone will be lost.

Before starting the process make sure that you met the following guidelines:

  • If you want to successfully install the Android Nougat crDroid custom ROM software, before starting the process, you first have to root your Motorola device andinstall a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP recovery on it, to flash the ROM and Google Apps zipped files and also take the full backup of your Moto Maxx smartphone.
  • As this is a manual update, you will need a computer to download the files and an USB cable to be able to connect your smartphone to the computer.
  • Make sure that you have installed the Moto Maxx USB drivers on your PC.
  • On your Moto Maxx device check the USB Debugging option. The USB Debugging option can be found under Settings -> Developer Options.
  • If you don’t have Developer Options enabled go to Settings -> About Phone and tap seven times repeatedly on the Built Number.
  • The battery level of your Moto Maxx device should be more than 70% charged.

How to Update Motorola Moto Maxx to Android 7.1 Nougat crDroid ROM- the process

  1. Download from here the Android 7.1 Nougat crDroid ROM and from here the compatible Google Apps package zipped files.
  2. Connect the Moto Maxx smartphone with the computer using an USB cable and transfer the downloaded files to the root folder of the internal device’s storage.
  3. Remove the USB connection when done and turn off your smartphone to boot into recovery mode, in order to perform the update process.
  4. Turn on the smartphone while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons at the same time. Once the TWRP logo appears, you have booted into the recovery.
  5. In TWRP recovery, perform a Nandroid backup and check the System, Data, Boot, Recovery, EFS options.
  6. Go to the main menu of TWRP recovery and tap on the install option. Locate the ROM .zip file into the internal storage of your phone and select it.
  7. Proceed with the installation process by swiping the confirmation button to install the ROM.
  8. Follow the same steps to install Google Apps package on your phone.
  9. Once the flashing process completed, reboot system by selecting “Reboot system now”.
